Another thing I love about Rockland County: Miniature Golf

Miniature golf course with lovely gardensWest Nyack, NY's best kept secret has to be the miniature golf course, maintained by the Town of Clarkstown. My family and I have lived in the neighborhood for five years, and although the course is about a half a mile from our house, we just discovered it this summer.

I didn't have high expectations when we went for the first time. I guess I was remembering the cheesy miniature golf courses of my youth. And I'd never heard anyone mention that Clarkstown had a great miniature golf course.

Boy, was I surprised! For $4 for kids and $5 for adults, you can have more than an hour of family fun, outdoors, in a beautiful, bucolic setting. Both times my family went this summer, very few people were on the course, so we took our time, reshot holes we liked, looked at the beautifully tended gardens along the way. (One hole is surrounded by a sea of lavendar -- heavenly.)

The winding paths on the course are dotted with benches, so lots of places to rest along the way, which is great for older folks or tired moms like me. Fortunately, there are also ample wastecans, too, which came in handy when I had to change a diaper on the course.

The club house has beverage vending machines offering a variety of soda and juice. Part of the treat for my kids is to get a drink after playing, and sitting on one of the benches, and watching other people play. In the nearby park, shaded picnic benches are a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch, brought from home.

To play on the course, you have to be a resident of Clarkstown, or accompanied by a resA waterfall and pretty foliage in Clarkstown's minature golf courseident. If you buy a season pass to the town pools, you get 4 free passes to the miniature golf course. The free passes are what got us to try it. I'm always looking for good, cheap family fun in Rockland County, NY.

The miniature golf course is open until the end of October, only two weekends left as I write. It is a gorgeous day today, and my kids are begging me to go. So, we will take our time and play today, making the family fun in Clarkstown last until opening day in the spring of 2009.
